Opened in 1890, this church has been at the centre of our community for generations and was constructed by the people of Bay Bulls and is the last major historic building in the community. The families of this great community have supported our church for generations.
The church currently serves the parish of Bay Bulls. The construction of the church started in 1882 and was constructed over an existing church on the site that was originally constructed in 1831. The Roman Catholic faith in Bay Bulls dates back to 1600 and 1700’s and the first chapel was burnt in the French invasion in 1792.
Sts. Peter & Paul Church, Bay Bulls is steeped in history and our parish has a long and distinguished history in the Archdiocese of St. John’s and Newfoundland.
The first Catholic Church was built in Bay Bulls some time before 1786 by Father James (later to be named Bishop) O’Donel.
In 1831, Bishop Fleming decided to erect Bay Bulls as a parish and appointed Dean Patrick Cleary as its first priest. He erected a splendid church on the present site of Sts Peter & Paul.
In 1890, Dean Nicholas Roche built the present church of Sts. Peter & Paul which stands today with only a few minor changes since 1890. The present church was under construction for a period of 8 years.
